How to Tell If Your Brakes Need to be Serviced

Published

There are a number of safety features on any car, from airbags to warning lights that show up on your dashboard, to brake-wear indicators that tell you when it’s time to have your brakes serviced before they give out. Brakes are a vital component to staying safe on the road, and if yours are slowly failing, damaged, or completely worn out, it’s only a matter of time before something bad happens.

There are a number of warning signs that signal when your brakes need to be serviced. These include grinding and squealing noises, your car shifting to one side while braking, or the brake pedal sitting lower than it should. Below is a list of issues to be aware of that may help you detect a problem before it becomes a catastrophic failure.

  1. Brake pedal vibrating or pulsating when you brake may indicate your brake rotors are wearing out and need to be replaced.
  2. If the brakes require you to press down extremely hard in order for them to bring the vehicle to a stop, this hints at a bad brake booster.
  3. Brake pedal falls to the floor without difficulty, or without any pressure at all, which could mean there is a leak in the braking system or the master cylinder is faulty.
  4. If your brakes lock up while you are driving at slow speeds, this might indicate leaking wheel cylinders.
  5. A burning smell when you brake usually means calipers are sticking, which is often caused by worn-out brake pads.
  6. Squealing or grinding noises usually means worn brake pads. If the pads are already worn out, grinding sounds can mean the rotors are being damaged.
  7. Longer braking distance usually means your brake pads need to be replaced.
  8. If the ABS light is on, it is always a good idea to get your car looked at by a professional, as this can indicate various issues.
  9. If you car slides/shifts to one side when you brake this might mean that a caliper is not working as it should.

What Our Clients Are Saying

I've been taking my car to VFC for nearly 4 years. Zach and his team have always been extremely communicative, make complicated car issues easy to understand, and decisions easy to weigh...I trust VFC WAY more than I ever did the local Audi dealership in Chicago. I genuinely believe they have my best interests in mind.”

Finally had some time to rate and review. Was having issues with my 3 series and was anticipating bad news. Zach and Carlos diagnosed and repaired my issue. Now the car drives like new. Amazing! Plus the 3yr/36k warranty on the work- you just can’t beat that. Honestly, that’s just confidence behind their work. I’m bringing in my fleet. Thank you guys!

Bought a used 2014 x3 as an extra with 2 new/young drivers. VFC was great on the prepurchase inspection AND normal maintenance and minor repairs since then. I trust that they manage what needs to be done - not just looking at a list and doing/charging me. Trust matters and the value is good!
