The Vehicle Maintenance Services Drivers Often Forget

Published

Most drivers understand the basics of vehicle upkeep—oil changes, tire rotations, and brake checks. But your car relies on more than just the standard services to stay reliable and safe. Many drivers often skip lesser-known maintenance tasks, but these services still play an important role in keeping your car running smoothly and comfortably over time.

Here are a few important services that many drivers forget, why they matter, and how often you should include them in your vehicle maintenance schedule.

1. Cabin Air Filter Replacement

While easy to forget, cabin air filter replacement plays a big role in your comfort and health. The cabin filter traps pollen, dust, and other airborne contaminants before they enter your vehicle’s ventilation system. Over time, it becomes clogged, reducing airflow and allowing unpleasant smells or allergens to circulate.

Signs you need a new cabin air filter:

  • Musty odors when using A/C or heat
  • Poor airflow from vents
  • Increased allergy symptoms while driving

For most vehicles, replacing the cabin filter every 15,000 to 30,000 miles is recommended. Because Chicago is a dirty environment, that interval may fall to as little as 10,000 miles. Ask Zach to check on this every time you have your oil changed.

2. Engine Air Filter

Your engine air filter is just as important, though often more neglected. It keeps dirt, debris, and dust from entering your engine and disrupting combustion. A dirty air filter can reduce fuel efficiency, impact throttle response, and cause your check engine light to appear.

Why it matters:

  • Protects the engine from damage
  • Helps maintain proper air-fuel balance
  • Supports smoother acceleration and improved MPG

Experts recommend checking your engine air filter at every oil change and replacing it at least once a year, depending on how and where you drive.

3. Fuel Induction System Cleaning

Many drivers ignore fuel induction system cleaning, but it can make a big difference in how well your car runs. Over time, carbon deposits build up in the throttle body, intake valves, and fuel injectors. This can lead to poor fuel economy, rough idling, and sluggish acceleration.

Benefits of cleaning the fuel induction system:

  • Restores fuel efficiency
  • Reduces engine hesitation
  • Improves throttle response and overall performance

We suggest doing this service every 30,000 to 60,000 miles—especially if you have a direct-injection engine, which can build up carbon more easily.

4. Brake Fluid Flush

Your brakes rely on hydraulic pressure, and brake fluid is what makes that possible. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture, which can lead to rust in the system and a spongy brake pedal. A brake fluid flush takes out the old, dirty fluid and replaces it with clean fluid to help your brakes work safely and respond quickly.

Why it’s important:

  • Maintains proper brake pressure
  • Prevents corrosion in the braking system
  • Ensures optimal stopping power in emergency situations

You should have your brake fluid tested every 1 to 2 years, and the system needs to be flushed every two years regardless of mileage. This is especially important in cities like Chicago, where changing seasons can stress your braking system.

Stay Ahead of Problems with a Complete Maintenance Plan

The truth is, skipping these services might not cause immediate problems—but over time, neglecting them can lead to costly repairs and reduced vehicle performance. By including cabin air filter replacement, engine air filter checks, fuel induction system cleaning, and fluid services in your vehicle maintenance schedule, you’ll keep your car running smoothly and safely for years to come.

Bought a used 2014 x3 as an extra with 2 new/young drivers. VFC was great on the prepurchase inspection AND normal maintenance and minor repairs since then. I trust that they manage what needs to be done - not just looking at a list and doing/charging me. Trust matters and the value is good!
